Landscaping at Finchley development Case Study

Landscape Transformation

Project Name: Wilmot & Thackrah Close
Client: The Finchley Charities & Education Support Services Ltd
Completion Date: February 2018
Location of Works: East Finchley, London

‘Wilmot Close’ is a residential development located in East Finchley since 1985, which provides sheltered housing for ages of 55 years and above. The requirement for modernising the site was essential not only to improve access requirements to cater for the varying abilities of the residents, but also to tie in aesthetically to the adjacent ‘Thackrah House’ new build construction that comprises of 16 modern homes all of which have been specially designed to again suit the needs of the clients.

Our landscaping and surfacing divisions combined their workforces, capabilities and knowledge in order to complete this project to the required high standard, and were awarded this prestigious contract by Education Support Services Ltd in conjunction with the main housing management company The Finchley Charities, who have been trading since the late 1400’s.

We were responsible for installing over 1,000m2 of Macadam and Resin Bound Gravel to car parks and pathways surrounding existing and new build properties, including substrate removal, excavation and reinstallation of undulating and unsuitable surfaces, creating new ramp accesses, borders and perimeters, new gullies and recessed covers, pressure washing and also line marking.

‘Rhine Gold’ and ‘Scandinavian’ were the Resin Bound Gravel colours selected by the architect for this project, of which have created an aesthetically pleasing, seamless, contemporary, low maintenance, anti-slip surface, all of which combine to produce the perfect requirements for this environment

One of the main requests of The Finchley Charities were to provide beautiful landscaped gardens including a central water feature surrounding the pathways in order to encourage communal gatherings between residents. The addition of smart granite setts and aluminium edge detail were used to separate the vibrant vegetation installed by our team.

Other items undertaken by our landscaping division included installation of new fencing including metallic gate posts, overcoming depth and level issues in order to produce suitable drainage and new timber planters, installation of a new concrete base for a ‘bin and bicycle’ store area, plus seeding and new turf installation. New pathways and vehicular areas were also formed, and carefully selected paviours were installed in the usual method and also laid upon pedestals.

Due to the timing of the works and the project requirements and logistics, a combined timeframe of 4 months was required to complete. However, we were very satisfied with the feedback from both the client and the residents all of which was extremely positive, stating their happiness with the end result.
